Bunbury cabinetmaker Nick Johnston has once again used his skills to impress, taking on the world’s best of his trade at the WorldSkills International competition in Abu Dhabi.
Mr Johnston, who trained at South Regional TAFE’s Bunbury campus before being selected in the Australian WorldSkills side, finished 11th in the international event.
His effort also helped the nation’s WorldSkills team finish the overseas competition in tenth place – the first time Australia has finished in the top 10.
Interviewed before travelling to Abu Dhabi to compete, Mr Johnston said the competition side of his work had pushed him to be quicker and more accurate in what he produces.
“Everything is different and challenging, I enjoy looking at the finished project and feeling like I have done something special,” he said.
“As for learning a trade yourself – go for it. You’ve got nothing to lose and there’s plenty of opportunities out there to find jobs doing something you really enjoy.”
