VISITING VIENNA IN JANUARY, WHAT SHOULD WE SEE AND DO THERE? WE ALSO WANT TO EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTIFUL SCENERY AROUND VIENNA. J. WARD, ROSANNA VIC
First off, contact Vienna Greeters (viennagreeters.com/) and book yourself a walking tour with a local, like all Greeters' tours, they're free. Since you're staying for quite some time, a Vienna Pass (viennapass.com/) would be a good idea. You get free admission to many of the city's top sights, including the Schonbrunn Palace, and unlimited rides on the hop-on, hop off bus. The Museum Quarter is another highlight as is a night with Viennese high society at one of the music halls. This is Mozart's city and Vienna cherishes his memory. Winter is also a great time to explore the city's cafe culture, and perhaps sample some of the cakes for which Vienna is famous. Time Out (timeout.com/) casts its judicious eye over the cafe and dining scene. For day trips outside Vienna, the UNESCO-listed Wachau Valley, Salzburg and Salzkammergut, a scenic region of lakes and alpine ranges, are all great choices. Check the Viator website (viator.com/) for options.
