Dalyellup Surf Life Saving Club personnel are celebrating the WA Government's pledge to assist the facility.
In September’s 2017/18 WA State Budget, the Labor Government announced $300,000 would go towards improved resources for the club.
Dalyellup SLSC treasurer Alan Lea said the club was looking to build a shed to replace the current set-up.
“It’s looking touch-and-go to look after our gear in here so a new shed will offer a lot more function and space for us,” he said.
“For us, it’s hard to keep everybody committed while working with deteriorating facilities so to have a much more welcoming space would go to keeping the current band enthusiastic, to keep doing what we do in the community, and hopefully attract a few more people down here as well.”
Mr Lea said the club was essential to providing community events and fitness opportunities.
“We try to teach them [children] a bit of self-preservation and also preservation of others,” he said.
“They’re going about keeping fit, we talk about keeping fit. We also talk about keeping safe; they then learn to be safe or try and help other people being safe.”
The club has worked out of the facilities at the end of Dalyellup Boulevard for the past 13 years. The set-up includes four sea containers and one room for first aid.
The sea containers store the club’s boards, all-terrain vehicles and inflatable rescue boats.
Mr Lea and Ms Broome said the club has faced significant problems with graffiti and break-in attempts.
Dalyellup SLSC president Yvonne Broome said a newly-developed facility could help to increase participant and volunteer numbers.
Mr Lea said he was hopeful the shed would be completed in time for the 2018/19 surf life-saving season.
The club would like to thank the WA Government, Member for Bunbury Don Punch, Shire of Capel and Satterley for their support.
