Telstra South West has provided funds for three community groups through its Connected Communities drive.
The campaign – run by Telstra’s Bunbury, Busselton and Eaton Fair’s outlets – invited the public to vote for organisations to share in $5000 in grant funding.
Hands Up 4 Kids received 376 votes and $3000, FAWNA inc. was given 316 votes and $1500, while Bunbury PCYC got 209 votes and $500.
Telstra held a breakfast event in Bunbury last month to announce and congratulate the recipients.
Hands Up 4 Kids is a not-for-profit organisation tasked with helping primary school students with literacy, reading and comprehension skills.
The group works alongside each school’s staff and curriculum.
Hands Up 4 Kids Regional Coordinator Jan Akaczonek said being awarded first prize was an honour.
Ms Akazconek said Connected Communities provided significant exposure for all three finalists.
She added the funds would go towards marketing initiatives, attracting more volunteers, and supporting existing volunteers.
“It’s really important that children establish strong literacy skills when they are young and that will carry with them right throughout their lives,” she said.
Ms Akazconek thanked Telstra as well as fellow finalists FAWNA inc. and Bunbury PCYC for their efforts in the community.
