The Bunbury Returned and Services League sub-branch will hold a ceremony to commemorate Remembrance Day on Saturday
The RSL’s Remembrance Day event will take place at Bunbury’s Anzac Memorial from 10.50am to 12pm on November 11.
The service will begin with a short march in the CBD towards the Stirling Street memorial.
The ceremony will also include wreath laying, a minute’s silence, the Last Post and the Australian National Anthem.
School, political, council and community representatives will be in attendance, while the Bunbury City Band will perform at the service.
The RSL will then serve light refreshments at its Spencer Street headquarters after the ceremony.
Bunbury RSL president John Gelmi said Remembrance Day commemorated the Australian soldiers whom fought in World War I.
“It’s not a big service but we get quite a lot of our own people there, the general public, schools, the parliamentarians and the mayor,” he said.
“It’s mainly to pay tribute to those that made the supreme sacrifice, we also think of the families left behind whom endured immense suffering because of the loss of their beloved ones.
“Every serviceman lost at war leaves a devastated family and that’s current to this day.
“That’s basically why we do it – to commemorate what these men and women have done during conflicts to preserve the freedom that we enjoy today.”
This Remembrance Day marks the 99th anniversary of the armistice which ended World War I.
After four years of warfare in Europe, the Western Front fell silent at 11am on November 11, 1918.
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month has since signified the ceasing of hostilities on the Western Front as well as remembrance for servicemen lost in World War I.
