It was a meat-fest of massive proportions when WA butchers met late last month at the Sheraton Hotel for the Australian Meat Industry Council's state championships.
Rump Shakers in Southern River won best gourmet burger for their patty, which combines lamb with oregano, pepper and sundried tomatoes.
The Corner Butcher in Morley won two awards - best traditional Australian beef and best beef burger.
Another twin winner on the night was Crimea Quality Meats for their traditional Australian pork and continental offering.
Further north, Barbaro Bros Quality Butchers in Greenwood also won twice, for its poultry and gourmet / open class offering, while finishing second in five other categories too.
Torre & Mordini Gourmet Meats' Brennan Robertson won apprentice butcher of the year.
WA winners will meet again when they head to Victoria next February for the national competition program.

Hot-diggety-dog
Eat big hot dog. Very fast. Win money.
That's the simple equation authentic German diner Brotzeit has proposed for Perth with its new eating challenge.
The difficult part for sausage lovers is the size: half a metre.
Be the fastest to eat Brotzeit's 50cm hot dog and you'll pocket $250.
The giant hot dog consists of a brioche baguette with pork sausage, sauerkraut, crispy onions, german mustard, tomato sauce and chips.
The usual menu and beers will be served to, for those who (sensibly) might just want to watch on.

Ta-ta, Takas ... CBD lunch haven shafted
The long-favoured cheap lunch spot of government workers and other CBDers has been shafted for good.
After 15 years thriving in Perth's first Melbourne-esque foodie laneway, Japanese beacon Taka has shut its doors.
Those needing a fix can still get it at Taka in Barrack Street and Fremantle.
Taka in Shafto Lane has closed, breaking the hearts of CBD workers.

Wet the whistle at the new Whitfords
Westfield has given foodies a reason to venture north to Whitford Shopping Centre after a makeover massive enough to give everyone the munchies.
Some crafty work has enabled the Whitfords Brewing Company to be completed in time for summer frothing.
Led by legendary master brewer Ken Arrowsmith and run by the same Beerland team who operate the Northbridge Brewing Company, WBC will be one of the major players at Whitford City's new multi-million-dollar dining and entertainment hub.
The new two-storey microbrewery features a beer garden, sky deck, its own range of beers brewed on site plus a range of other tap beers, like surfer Mick Fanning's flavour-frothed Balter XPA, and seasonal brews.
The other flagship tenant at the Westfield venue is the very funky Hunter & Barrel, which specialises in quality meat and barrel-aged beverages.
The restaurants already operates thriving venues in Sydney and Melbourne, and executive chef Peter Popow (what a name) is a gun in the arts of slow-cooked meat and innovative techniques.
