The often-maligned Perth Bell Tower has trumped a host of higher-profile competitors to be named Western Australia's top tourist attraction.

The controversial structure was named Perth's top tourist attraction at the 2017 Perth Airport WA Tourism Awards on Monday evening, and was closely followed by Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures and Albany's National ANZAC Centre.

The Perth Bell Tower team were "thrilled" with their win, and manager Gerry Lyng said it was the third gold award the Tower has taken out and its sixteenth award in total.

"We are thrilled and honoured to receive this award on behalf of the Swan Bells Foundation, our Patrons and Ambassadors, all of whom play a vital role in its ongoing cultural significance," he said.

Whiteman Park also took home the gold medal for "major" tourist attraction, beating out Fremantle Prison and family friendly Rottnest Island for the top spot.

It's the second year in a row Whiteman Park has taken out the gold medal in the same category, and scored a win over the much-loved Rottnest Island.

A full list of winners is available at the Tourism Council of WA's website.
