They were a symbol of the counter-culture of the 1960s gone wrong - hippies who killed for their leader Charles Manson. So what happened to them and where are they now?
PATRICIA Krenwinkel - born December 3, 1947
Patricia Krenwinkel met Charles Manson in 1967. Now 69, she is longest-serving female inmate in the California penal system. She is imprisoned at the California Institution for Women in Corona, serving a life sentence after she was found guilty of all seven of the Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969. Her original death sentence was commuted to life in prison after the California Supreme Court deemed the death penalty unconstitutional. She has been denied parole 13 times.
SUSAN ATKINS - born May 7, 1948, died September 24, 2009
The longest-serving female inmate in California before her death in 2009, Susan Atkins was one of Manson's closest confidantes. Like Krenwinkel, she was sentenced to death for her involvement in eight of the Manson Family's killings in 1969, including the murder of actress Sharon Tate, but this was changed to life in prison. She married twice while in prison and was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2008.
LESLIE VAN HOUTEN - born August 23, 1949
Leslie Van Houten was 19 when she was convicted for her involvement in the murder of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca. The 68-year-old is imprisoned at the California Institution for Women. She was retried twice after her initial death sentence, but was eventually convicted and sentenced to life in prison. A panel of state commissioners recommended her for parole in September 2017, but Governor Jerry Brown did not sign off on the recommendation. He also failed to approve a recommendation for parole in 2016.
CHARLES 'TEX' WATSON - born December 2, 1945
Charles Watson was a key member of the Manson Family, known as the right-hand man of Manson himself and he was also convicted and sentenced for the Tate-LaBianca murders. He became an ordained minister while in prison, in addition to getting married, having four children, and getting divorced. He is being held in the Mule Creek State Prison near Sacramento and is next eligible for parole in 2021.
LINDA KASABIAN - born June 21, 1949
The star witness of the Manson Family trials, Linda Kasabian was granted immunity for her testimony against the other members. Drove the others to where the murders took place because she was the only 'family' member with a valid driver's licence. She has given a handful of interviews since the murders, but has predominantly stayed out of the public eye.
STEVE 'CLEM' GROGAN - born October 5, 1942
Steve Grogan was present during the August 9 murders, but remained in the car throughout. He was later convicted, however, of the August 1969 murder of stunt man Donald Shea at the Spahn Ranch where the family was located. As with many of the others, he was sentenced to death, but the sentence was changed to life in prison. Grogan was paroled in 1985 after he showed authorities where Shea's remains were located.
BRUCE DAVIS - born October 5, 1942
Bruce Davis wasn't involved in the Tate-LaBianca murders, but was sentenced to life in prison for killing Gary Hinman and Donald Shea in July and August 1969 respectively. He has been denied parole 31 times, the most recent in June, and is in the California Men's Colony near San Luis Obispo. Davis was close to Manson and became a born-again Christian in prison.
BOBBY BEAUSOLEIL - born November 6, 1947
Also convicted for the murder of Gary Hinman, Bobby Beausoleil is serving a life sentence in the California Medical Facility. While in prison he joined the Aryan Brotherhood but hasn't had any disciplinary reports since 2008.
LYNETTE 'SQUEAKY' FROMME - born October 22, 1948
Lynette Fromme wasn't involved in the 1969 murders, but was sentenced to life in prison for an attempted assassination of the US President Gerald Ford in 1975. Confronting the President, Fromme pointed a gun at him, but it didn't fire. She was then tackled to the ground by Secret Service agents. She was released on parole in 2009 after serving 34 years in prison.
MARY BRUNNER - born December 17, 1943
Like Lynette Fromme, Mary Brunner wasn't involved in the Tate-Labianca murders, but was a devoted disciple to Manson. She was his first follower after the pair met in 1967 and had a child with him called Valentine Michael Manson. Charged with the murder of Gary Hinman, she was given immunity for her testimony against both Atkins and Beausoleil. She was later involved in a plan to hijack a Boeing 747 in order to have the other Manson Family members released from prison, which ended in a shoot-out with police and a prison term.
