The heartbreak of missing out on a basketball representation berth quickly turned to joy for former Bunbury reisdent Brendon Canzirri, who jumped ship to Ultimate Frisbee and never looked back.
Brendon will line up for Western Australia at the Australian 2017 under-22 Ultimate Championships from November 24-26 in Sydney.
It all came about after Canzirri, a state level basketballer, was shattered to learn that his chosen sport was off the table at the University Games.
"I booked flights to go over to the University Games for basketball, but the team got cancelled," he said.
"I needed to play a sport and Ultimate needed some players. I was different, I didn't really know what Ultimate was but I really enjoyed it and stuck with it."
Two years later and Canzirri is making representative teams in his new sport, a sport he has noticed many young people are gravitating towards.
"It's great fun and a great social experience as well," he said.
"You get quite a diverse range of people, usually they are very socially accepting and quite out there.
"It starts off with people bringing their friends down, they get into it and just keeps on going."
