A group of 30 high school students are finishing the year on a high after successfully building a new amphitheatre in 10 weeks.
The project, which was completed as part of an Introduction Construction Course, was officially opened yesterday at South Regional TAFE.
The training program run by South Regional TAFE and Master Builders Australia was part of a national pilot project with students attaining a White Card – mandatory for those working on a construction site.
South Regional TAFE managing director Duncan Anderson said it was fantastic to see students given the opportunity to gain construction skills from a young age and trial work in the industry.
“We’re very pleased to be part of this program working alongside Master Builders and providing the expertise of our lecturers and staff to deliver first-class training,” he said.
“By working in partnership with Master Builders, we can ensure the training we are providing is going to meet industry needs and decide if a career in construction is right for them.”
The project helped students gain a variety of skills on a real-life construction site with the support of highly qualified trades lecturers.
Master Builders Australia national training director Robert Wilson said the company was pleased to be working on this initiative for local students looking to join the construction industry.
