Bunbury has come together to help injured BMX champion Cory Crombie through rehabilitation.
The 15-year-old was taken to Bunbury Hospital following an accident during training at Bunbury BMX Club on Wednesday, December 27.
He was then moved to Perth’s Princess Margaret Hospital, where it was revealed Cory had suffered multiple fractures in his vertebrae.
Surgery saw four vertebrae fused together and two rods placed on his spine to prevent further damage.
Since the accident, Cory has regained movement in his toes and legs.
Cory’s father Neil Crombie said the next test was whether he could sit up on the edge of the bed.
Mr Crombie said his son, now facing three months of rehabilitation in PMH, was determined to overcome the challenges ahead.
A GoFundMe page set up to assist the Crombie family has raised almost $4000 so far.
Bunbury BMX Club will hold a fundraising event on Friday, January 19 with all proceeds from race nominations, the canteen and raffle being donated to the family.
Bunbury BMX Club president Lieth Spence said the Crombie family was a significant part of the community.
“One thing the BMX community is good at is supporting the BMX family, which we call it,” he said
“Everyone that is involved in BMX is part of one big family, that’s what the atmosphere around the club is like.
“Support seems to be coming freely at the moment from a lot of the other clubs as well.”
Cory’s dad thanked PMH, Ronald McDonald House, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service for assisting Cory during this time.
Mr Crombie also acknowledged the Bunbury BMX Club and Greater Bunbury community for their messages of support.
