The Bunbury Basketball Association hopes to extend its reach into the community in the near future.
BBA secretary Marina Quain said the league has reached membership capacity at 187 teams registered in the current junior and senior domestic competition played at South West Sports Centre.
She said the association would like for three courts to be added to SWSC, creating a six-court multi-use facility for all indoor sports and community events.
Ms Quain presented the issue to the City of Bunbury at the 2017 Annual General Meeting of Electors last month.
BBA has received funding from the South West Development Commission for a case study looking into the need for six courts at the precinct.
Ms Quain said more courts were needed to accommodate the expanding local and regional populations while the three existing courts also needed to be re-sized to meet International Basketball Federation guidelines.
“More indoor courts would mean that the City of Bunbury could host major sport and community events that would attract thousands of people who would stay and spend in our community,” she said.
SWSC acting general manager Gary Thompson told the Mail the incoming Community Sport and Recreation Strategy was designed to deliver significant changes to the centre over the next 10 years.
The City of Bunbury discussed the idea of convening a basketball reference group at its meeting on Tuesday, January 16.
