Changes to Koombana North will bring further prosperity to the region according to City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan.
The Mayor confirmed the complete removal of the mineral sands tanks from the Outer Harbour area was scheduled for late February.
Once cleared, the area will eventually become a hub for shops, cafes, apartments and a marina.
Mr Brennan said stage two of Transforming Bunbury Waterfront would start this year, including significant changes to Jetty Road and Casuarina Bay.
He said a six-storey apartment block would also be included in the construction for Koombana North.
“The Koombana North construction is now underway, so that will be the first of hopefully five major developments on that land,” he said.
“Austpro, who are building and own that land, have also bought the adjoining lot so hopefully once the first lot has been completed, the second lot will be able to commence pretty well straightaway.”
The Department of Transport will also build more boat pens for the project whilst Transforming Bunbury Waterfront stages three and four will take place in ‘future years’.
The Mayor said the Koombana Park Precinct, formerly set aside for the proposed Department of Parks and Wildlife headquarters, was part of the area’s ongoing revitalisation.
“That site demands an iconic development on there and the City will work closely with the State Government and its agencies to come up with a really creative solution for that lot,” he said.
Mr Brennan also congratulated Bunbury-based contractor Perkins Builders for securing the tender for the new Dolphin Discovery Centre, due for completion later this year.
“It’s a marvellous facility, the work of the volunteers is great and the centre is able to attract people from other countries who volunteer their time to work on monitoring dolphins and the environment,” he said.
The new-look Koombana Bay Footbridge’s installation began in late 2017 and is due for completion this month.
Last year also saw the completion of the Koombana Bay Foreshore’s new playground, barbecue areas, kiosk and amphitheatre. The City will hold the foreshore’s official opening on February 3.
Mr Brennan said Koombana’s redevelopment would potentially deliver increased job opportunities and more people to Bunbury.
