The team at Central Newsagency has successfully fought to keep one of Bunbury’s musical treasures in front of its premises.
Central News owners Suzanne and Ian Cross set up a campaign to have the Travelling Piano placed in front of the Victoria Street outlet indefinitely, in honour of Bunbury’s Piano Man, Ray Robins.
Lotterywest has since approved to have it placed back in front of the store.
“The travelling piano came up as a Bunbury City council initiative and they wanted this travelling piano to move around, Ray found out about this and started playing,” Mr Cross said.
“Initially it went to a lot of places in the CBD and he used to follow it and go and play it at different places."
Mrs Cross said community members were drawn to Bunbury’s CBD to experience Mr Robins’s exquisite piano skills.
Mr Robins passed away in hospital on Christmas Day after a short illness.
Before being hospitalised late last year, Mr Robins had played the piano in front of the newsagency six days a week.
The piano was forced to be removed from the shopfront before he was hospitalised.
