A Bunbury family has become passionate about the world around them, all thanks to the medium of photography.
Last September, Cameron (13), Indiana (11) and Izaak (9) Gee joined nearly 200 children from the South West in the Focus Force Kids With Cameras Fun Foto workshop program.
Run by Focus Force project coordinator Phillip Williams, the initiative was part of the Blooming Wild Festival.
The project saw the trio experiment with cameras and take shots of the blooming wildflowers in Bridgetown.
Small exhibitions, showcasing each photographer’s works, were held in shires across the South West, ahead of the major showcase at the Manjimup Art Gallery throughout January.
Out of the nine Kids with Cameras’ Superb Super Shots categories, Indiana took out the NiCe and Fleur divisions while Cameron won the Treemendous round.
Indiana went on to collect second prize overall.
She said photography made for rewarding and unforgettable experiences.
“You get to have an adventure – the photos help you to remember the adventures that you have, you can hang them up and make your bedroom or house colorful,” she said.
Cameron said the workshop taught them about the essential aspects of photography.
“It was really cool and it was a good experience to go outside and take some native flower photos,” he said.
Izaak said they used a variety of angles and techniques to make their photos come alive.
“You can take photos of one thing from all different angles and it will look different in each photo,” he said.
As Indiana, Cameron and Izaak’s parents and teachers, Craig and Isabel Gee were immensely proud of the trio’s efforts.
“I think it is such an important skill to have especially because we’re becoming such a digital-friendly society,” Mrs Gee said.
“Each media artist can go out and look at the same thing but from a different angle and with different lighting.
“Those skills can be used for everything in their lives or for their careers.”
Mr Gee commended Mr Williams for teaching and guiding Indiana, Cameron and Izaak throughout the program.
