A crowbar-wielding man has tried to carjack a woman in Melbourne's east while disguising his face with a dishcloth.

The man was wearing the makeshift Chux mask when he approached the woman as she sat in her parked car at the Mullum Mullum Reserve in Donvale on Sunday afternoon.

Wielding a crowbar, the man demanded the woman get out of the white Mercedes Benz.

When she refused, he fled on foot, police say.

Police on Friday released a photofit of the man, who was wearing a dark beanie, black long sleeved top and light-coloured pants, plus the Chux wipe over his mouth.

He is described as tanned and about 175cm tall, with brown eyes and short dark hair.
