A group of Newton Moore Senior High School students are gearing up to represent Bunbury on the national stage.
The team of Engineering Specialist Class students including Harry Smith, Kage Geyer, Bonnie Cook, Jordan Neill and Brodie Cook – will compete at the F1 in Schools National Championships in Launceston, Tasmania in March.
Team manager Bonnie Cook said the group was aiming to achieve the best results possible and do Newton Moore SHS proud.
“We want to represent Bunbury and Western Australia really well on an Australia-wide scale at the national titles,” she said.
“We want to show that we have something to offer.”
Manufacturing Engineer Kage Geyer said the next few weeks would involve testing, analysis, paperwork, practicing presentations and completing the team’s portfolio.
“We had a rough idea about how we wanted the booth to look and we broke it down to determine the structure, sizes and how many sheets we needed,” Geyer said.
Resource manager Brodie Cook said the program provided participants with unique opportunities and real-world skills.
“It has helped me to build up my life-skills through working with money and expenditure,” he said.
Newton Moore SHS head of science Lorraine Ellis said the program was valuable to the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics curriculum.
“This is one of the premier international STEM events so having WA represented at the Nationals by Newton Moore SHS marks a big feather in our cap for our engineering program,” she said.
“These students are so driven and want to get to the internationals.”
Last year, the group picked up the Innovation Award and Best Verbal Presentation at the state titles.
After placing second overall, the crew received the National Finals Wildcard and entry into next month’s event.
The group began preparations during the 2017/18 school holidays before working each day during the first few weeks of term one.
The F1 in Schools program required students to design and build a scale Formula 1 car.
Teams also had to find sponsors, organise funding and create free-standing booths.
