In a bid to breathe new life into Bunbury’s waterfront, preparations are now taking place for the redevelopment of the Dolphin Discovery Centre.
Though people can still visit the centre and participate in tours, outside areas have been fenced off to allow Bunbury-based Perkins Builders to start carrying out works.
South West Development Commission acting chief executive Rebecca Ball said it was an exciting time to be in Bunbury and see the vision for the waterfront being made into reality.
“The redevelopment of the Dolphin Discovery Centre is the next step in the process of transforming the waterfront, and is expected to be a catalyst for growth in the tourism market,” she said.
“This project is creating local jobs for people by having a local company contracted to deliver the redevelopment.
“The new centre will create a fresh new experience for visitors, attracting people to Bunbury who will easily be able to walk between the central business district, Koombana Foreshore and Dolphin Discovery Centre.”
Once complete, the revamped tourist attraction will be a landmark, which will include modern exhibits, a new café, multi-use space and souvenir shop.
The Dolphin Discovery Centre will remain open from 8am to 4pm seven days a week until the end of April.
It will be closed from May 1 to allow for construction to take place, with doors scheduled to re-open late 2018.
