Melbourne's Moomba Festival tradition Birdman Rally on Yarra River raises money for charity | photo gallery

Perfect for the ‘Doc’ Brown’s among us – the Birdman Rally took flight on Sunday.

The long-held Moomba Festival tradition, which raises money for various charities, sees courageous creators flying homemade devices across Melbourne’s Yarra River.

According to the Moomba Festival website, the amount they raise before the leap contributes ‘extra length’ to their total distance.

Retired actor and all-round inspiration Samuel Johnson took out the top prize last year, raising more than $25,000 for Love Your Sister.

The rally is a worldwide phenomenon, being held in not only Melbourne, but the UK, China and Japan.

The first Birdman Rally was held in 1976, but the Moomba tradition took a six-year hiatus until it returned in 2004.
