POLICE will be targeting areas known for magic mushroom harvesting from June to September this year.
First class constable Clint Murray of the Donnybrook Police said the active compound in magic mushrooms was psilocybin, or psilocin, which could cause hallucinations. It can also have long term mental health effects.
"There's a potential risk to life through consumption," Constable Murray said.
"You can also mistake them for poisonous mushrooms and people can do themselves some harm."
Donnybrook, Nannup, Boyup Brook and Bridgetown police will be conducting operations to target vehicles and individuals suspected of being in possession of magic mushrooms throughout the winter period.
Fourteen people were charged with drug-related offences in last year's operations.
"People caught with magic mushrooms, or any other drug-related items, face a court appearance, thousands of dollars in fines and jail terms," Constable Murray said.
This year the operation will receive further resources, including a drug dog. "The operation will be kicking off very soon. Be vigilant and take care," Constable Murray said.
