STAR Bruce Rock footballer AJ Williams, 19, became the third person to die on WA roads over the Easter long weekend.
His Nissan Navara utility left the wrong side of the Bruce Rock-Narembeen Road about a kilometre south-east of Bruce Rock about 9.30pm on Thursday, April 17, and slammed into a tree.
The impact tore a front wheel off the vehicle and crushed the passenger’s side.
Williams, who was alone in the vehicle, died at the scene.
His body had to be cut from the wreckage.
St John Ambulance and fire and emergency service attended.
Williams was the 2013 Bruce Rock Sportsperson of the Year and one of the stars of the local football club.
As well as a key player, this year, with Bruce Rock scheduled to take on Corrigin this Saturday in the first round of the Eastern Districts Football League, he had also joined the Bruce Rock Football Club committee.
In the hours after the crash the football club posted on its Facebook page: “The club has a hole in it this morning following the passing of our great mate AJ Williams.
“A committee member, a super player but more importantly a mate to all.
“Deepest sympathy to the Williams family and AJ's friends.
“That cheeky grin will be missed by us all.”
