Bunbury’s newest firefighting recruit is itching to begin active duty at the station after his graduation ceremony last Friday.
Dain Hutton has been working hard to shine among 1500 potential candidates to secure his position as a recruit firefighter in Bunbury, a dream he said he wasn’t sure was possible in the beginning.
“Just to get a run over there are 1500 applicants to contend with and from them only 24 are selected,” he said.
“Some of the competition are real standout people too so it was very tough work and I didn’t think I was actually going to get through.”
But the hard work isn’t over for Mr Hutton yet, he still has a long road to go.
"I still have five years of study and hard work to get though before I’m fully accredited, but after that I’ll be laughing.”
Previously Mr Hutton was a medic and said with his new role he wants to use his passion for helping people to great affect.
“In this job you’re with a person on what could potentially be the worst day of their life and to be able to help them and make them more comfortable is incredibly rewarding.”
Mr Hutton said he’s hoping to progress to a stage in his DFES career where he will be able to help his crew and the community.
"Where ever I end up I want to be able to provide support to the people I work with and support to the community through teaching fire awareness in schools but I know for sure I’ll be staying in Bunbury throughout my career.”
