Representatives from a number of Bunbury organisations gathered last week to engage in a two-day mental health first aid course.
Enable South West quality assurance and service development manager Michael Finn said the nationally recognised program provided introductory knowledge and understanding of mental health first aid with a focus on support.
“The intention of the course was to make people more aware of other’s vulnerability and how to access support for people,” he said.
Mr Finn said it has been pleasing to see in recent years that the community are gaining a better understanding an acceptance of mental illness. “There has been a real focus on getting people more aware that there are services ready to help treat mental illness,” he said.
“Ideally, I would like to see mental health treated no differently to any other condition.”
Mr Finn said once his agency had two workers qualified to deliver the training themselves, they will hold workshops in the wider region early next year.
