Congratulations are in order for two local men who have been nominated in the 2016 Western Australian Regional Achievement and Community Awards.
Bunbury man Raymond Frost and Boyanup man Laurence Julian Sanders have been nominated for the Community TAB Service Awards.
Moving to Bunbury in 1982, Ray became a member of the Carey Park Parish of the Anglican Church and has actively supported the churches outreach to the community ever since.
He also offered his services as a volunteer at the Bunbury Mission to Seafarers where he was awarded the 30 year Active Volunteer Award in 2015.
Through both of these organisations, 86-year-old Ray has demonstrated his commitment to the community and especially those less fortunate.
Nominator Fr Joe Hopkins said over many years, Ray had demonstrated a deep love of serving people especially those struggling with their lives.
“For many years, he has been a great listener to lonely and struggling seamen, especially the young who are homesick having been away from home for the first time, or having been advised that their wife has given birth to their first child,” Fr Hopkins said.
“His care for people and attention to detail has served us and them very well, and his down to earth practical wisdom has been much appreciated.”
Boyanup resident of 60 years Laurence Julian Sanders was nominated by Shire of Capel’s Marisa Blandford in recognition of his devotion to his community.
Mr Sanders joined the Boyanup Bush Fire Brigade in 1950 and has been a member for 66 years and until recently was still an active fire fighter.
He was also the founding member of the Boyanup Memorial Park Committee with over 50 years of service and is a Freeman of the Shire of Capel.
A local Boyanup park has even been named after him – the Julian Sanders Park.
Mr Sanders has also been the editor of The Boyanup Post since 1990 and has been instrumental in providing the Shire of Capel with newsletters.
Judging is to be completed on Thursday, September 15 and winners announced on Friday, October 28.
