Former Bunbury Senior High School student Stephen de Filippo has been the recipient of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra’s Cybec 21st Century Australian Composers Award for his experimental classical music.
Mr de Filippo is currently preparing his honours thesis at The University of Western Australia - studying music composition.
“My music is a bit complex, and not necessarily approachable. I like exploring subtlety in the manipulation of sound - trying to convey different sorts of colours and textures through instruments,” he said.
“It’s not always pretty, but I don’t think it needs to be - the music is more about an appreciation of the organisation of sounds.”
His work, entitled Static Anxiety, toys with the notion of discomfort and lack of movement within an orchestral setting. Stephen hopes that 2017 will see performances of his music in Germany, France, Canada, and USA as apart of competitive conservatoire programs.
Static Anxiety will be performed at Iwaki Auditorium, Melbourne on January 28.
