Bunbury sends a strong message to Canberra at marriage equality rally

After an hour of singing songs and checking voting enrolments at Anzac Park, the 500 strong group marched down Victoria Street to spread the message that love is love. 

After the march, a capacity crowd of 300 enjoyed a Love is Love concert at the Elliott Street Bar. 

Bunbury MLA Don Punch attended the march and told the crowd they were sending an incredibly important message to Canberra – that this town stands for love, diversity and inclusiveness. 

“We shouldn’t actually be here today and we shouldn’t have to march today and the only reason we are is because the people in Canberra couldn’t come to a decision,” he said. 

“Today we as part of the community of Bunbury are going to make a statement about the importance of love. We are going to celebrate intimacy, we are going to recognise that people are social creatures and that relationships are more important than anything else. 

“We are going to recognise diversity, walk for inclusiveness and every step that we take is an important one in the celebration of love.”

Mr Punch reminded those present that to have their say in the federal government’s plebiscite on whether gay marriage should be legally recognised in Australia, they must be enrolled to vote before August 24.
