Bunbury businessman Jon Dixon unveils his vision for a new destination park

Mr Dixon said in recent months the community had been coming together to support plans for a new youth precinct alongisde the Leschenault Inlet that could include a skate park, an all-inclusive playground, bmx track, a small water playground and a hill slide. 

“The existing skate park is poor and competitions in Bunbury have been cancelled,” he said. 

“Locals rarely use it. Those who enjoy these types of sports travel to newer facilities in Australind, Busselton and Collie.”

Mr Dixon said other towns have noticed a massive influx of tourists came to visit after a new skate park was opened. 

“What might drag people in off that freeway?” he asked council. “This facility would have use 365 days a year.” 

Mr Dixon said he estimates the park would cost around $3 million to build. He also said the plan for this skate park, should replace the City of Bunbury’s long held plan for a water park. 

“The space opposite Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre has room for basketball rings, a performance area – we just want to create a fun area to bring everyone together,” he said. 

“I would ask council to provide some funds to provide professional plans and costings along with further consultation with local children and parents.

“I also ask council recommend the reassignment of funds in the budget of $1 million for a water park to now be designated for this destination park.” 

It is understood the council will consider establishing a steering committee to develop the concept further with the City of Bunbury’s Youth Advisory Council keen to be involved.
