A group of dance students from Dalyellup College recently travelled to Mandurah to compete in the 2017 YOH Fest finals.
The Youth on Health Festival puts its focus on youth health and strives to encourage young people to make positive lifestyle choices, build confidence and leadership skills.
The 20th anniversary of the state wide competition, saw 93 entries in the heats leading up to the final, where the top eight dance items were selected for the evening event.
Dalyellup College dance teacher Jenaya Bell said after the school narrowly missed out on finals selection last year, the students set a goal this year to make the grade.
“The girls performed extremely well and received some glowing feedback from the evening adjudicators,” Ms Bell said.
“They also received a certificate of merit for emotive story which is a highly commendable achievement.
“We are all very proud of their efforts and commitment – they did themselves and the school proud by reaching their goal.”
Ms Bell said the festival is an opportunity for young people to express their views on health issues that are relevant to both themselves and the community they are part of.
The theme of this year’s festival was ‘it starts with me’ and the Dalyellup students developed a dance routine that looked at why society disregards homlessness and how steps to change this attitude start with a single act of kindness.
