The Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre Summer Film Festival returns for another year in 2018, with a superb line-up of 12 international films running across five weekends from Friday, January 12 to Saturday, February 10.
The festival opens with Italian screwball comedy and winner of the 2017 Italian Golden Globe for best comedy, Let Yourself Go.
Let Yourself Go, from celebrated filmmaker Francesco Amato, follows performer Toni Servillo as an up-tight psychoanalyst who goes on a light-hearted adventure with a personal trainer.
The movie delves into matters of the body and mind.
BREC executive director Sharon Custers said Bunbury film lovers were in for a treat with this season’s selection.
“We are super excited about the line-up of films for this year’s Summer Film Festival,” she said.
“We’ve handpicked the best films coming out of the European and Australian festival circuit for you to enjoy right here in the Southwest.
“Take a chance on something you’ve never tried before and be surprised and inspired.”
Ms Custers’ personal pick of the festival is the documentary Mountain (Australia).
She applauded the film for it breathtaking scenes and inspiring music by the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
The executive director said the 2018 international film festival would not be possible without the support from its funding partners Lottery West, City of Bunbury, Scope and South 32 as well as BREC media partners GWN and Lomax.
BREC was also thrilled to announce the inclusion of CinefestOZ winner Ali’s Wedding (Australia), an affectionate film about family, duty and love in multicultural Australia.
Ali, the charming but misguided son of a muslim cleric, does not know which direction his life is heading in.
Meanwhile, despite being promised to a girl at his father’s mosque, Ali yearns for the woman of his dreams.
The $100,000 CinefestOz Film Prize winner delves into Ali’s life as he tries to find his place in the world.
Nicole Kidman stars in The Killing of a Sacred Deer (USA) a film by acclaimed director Yorgos Lanthimos.
The drama-thriller also stars Colin Farrell as a renowned cardiovascular surgeon fighting to protect his family’s domestic bliss.
Similarly to his last feature (2015’s The Lobster), Lanthimos crafts a thriller fueled by unsettling humour, dread, emotion and suspense.
The festival includes films from all corners of the globe such as The Odyssea, a dazzling French biopic which follows the chaotic life of celebrity oceanographer Jacques Cousteau.
French romantic-comedy Just to Be Sure, Italian drama Indivisible, The Teacher – a Slovakian film about communism in the 1980s – and Loving Vincent (UK), a film made from over 65,000 hand-painted oil-paintings.
Loving Vincent sees its actors portraying the subjects of Vincent Van Gogh’s most famous works, with a team of animators bring them to life.
Other films featured in the festival include French animation My Life as a Courgette, French drama The Midwife and Austrian opera Carmen on the Lake.
