For those that live and breathe surf life saving, 2018 will provide a chance to start fresh thanks to new and improved facilities at the Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club.
Plans to redevelop the facility – off Ocean Drive – began almost a decade ago.
Bunbury Surf Life Saving Club president Denise Duncan said increased numbers meant the club had become too big for the building.
“We made a plan to refurbish the hall, bar area and kitchen so that we could actually have a really great home for our members to socialise in,” she said.
The club put infrastructure plans in place before receiving a $365,000 LotteryWest grant in 2016. The City of Bunbury also contributed to the project, while the club itself put in over $100,000.
The club also upgraded its change rooms, made possible with help from the Department of Sport and Recreation and South West Development Commission, and refurbished the merchandise store.
Ms Duncan said the redevelopments added to the city’s aesthetic and inclusivity.
“It’s all hugely beneficial because it allows us to increase our membership and we’re going to have a beautiful social facility for members,” she said.
“It values our members and the important, life-saving service they give.
“It’s just excellent from our own point of view, as a life saving club.”
The club has also added a ramp for special needs access and beautified the areas around the toilet block, with plans to also re-do its boat shed and the Koombana Bay lookout tower.
Ms Duncan said added resources and space would open the door to increased membership.
“It’s a great, family-oriented club and I think it will build that family membership,” she said.
“Everyone supports one another because it is such a big job to do on the beach.”
Construction took place from June 2017, with the entire project due for completion this month.
The club is already building its social calendar for 2018, getting ready to host a life saving night/family fun night on January 5.
