The lifesaving work that the Gelorup Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade does for the community has been acknowledged with a generous donation.
Woolworths Dalyellup has provided the firefighting service with 10 cartons of drinking water ahead of this year’s bushfire season.
Gelorup and Dalyellup fire control officer Jeff McDougall said the superstore regularly assisted the bush fire brigade’s efforts.
“Without help from groups like Woolworths we would struggle to do our job,” he said.
“We’re a not-for-profit organisation so everything we do we have to fund out of our own pocket.
“We do get a bit of assistance from the Shire of Capel or we fund it ourselves.”
Mr McDougall said the brigade would, on average, go through 40 water bottles per fire and thanked the community and organisations for pitching in whenever they could.
“When you get to a decent bush fire you get very hot and thirsty,” he said.
“This donation is a tremendous help to us, we carry a small fridge on board so we can put all of our drinks that Woolworths have donated in to keep them cool for the firefighters.
“It keeps them rehydrated so we can keep going on the fireground to help the community.”
Gelorup Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade regularly conducts controlled burns and trains twice per month at the station.
