Australind Soccer Club has brought on some new talent to help its premier men’s side in 2018.
Oliver McGee has been announced as the team’s new coach for next season.
McGee, originally from Manchester, has played the world game since the age of five.
After moving to Australia for work, he represented ECU Joondalup in the Football West State League soccer competition.
The soccer star then came to Bunbury in 2009 to don the South West Phoenix jersey.
“Back then you were allowed to play for the state team and the Sunday team, and all of the guys from the State team were affiliated with the local soccer teams,” he said.
“Mine was Australind so I probably played about five games for them during the season.”
McGee went on to play for Mandurah City FC’s State League outfit.
The 30-year-old seized the opportunity to lead one of Australind’s top teams.
“The opportunity came with Australind, they were keen and I was keen to do it too,” he said.
“I do know some of the guys in the club on a social level, and they seem to be a really well organised club – the facilities are great, the people are friendly and there is a really social, friendly vibe around the club.”
The Australind premier men’s team finished bottom of the ladder in the 2017 season with four wins and 13 losses.
McGee has a plan to lift the team’s spirits and improve upon last year’s results.
“I am a winner at heart and I am looking for us to be as high on that table as we possibly can with the group of players that we’ve got,” he said.
“Right now, it’s just about working on the basics – we’ve got two months now before we start the season on April 8 and so we’re focusing on fitness and ball work for the next few weeks.”
