The City of Bunbury will set up an advisory group to maintain the South West Sports Centre into the future.
At its meeting on January 23, the council turned down the motion to devise a basketball reference group.
A motion was then put forward to create a South West Sports Centre advisory group for future plans.
Bunbury Basketball Association chairman David Wren presented the organisation’s point of view to the council.
He said more multi-use courts would help the association cope with the league’s ever-expanding number of players.
Bunbury Basketball Association secretary Marina Quain had initially presented to the council at last year’s Annual Meeting of Electors.
Ms Quain told the Mail the organisation also campaigned for the existing courts to be upgraded to fit International Basketball Federation guidelines.
City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said the advisory group would thoroughly investigate the sport centre and Hay Park’s current facilities.
“The majority of councillors wanted to have something more formal than a reference group and, at the end of the day, the same goal will be achieved, I believe,” he said.
“That is that we would get an informed understanding of what the various users of Hay Park and the South West Sports Centre require.
“Then it’s a matter of determining the priorities of those requirements.”
Mr Wren and Ms Quain were both pleased with the results of January 23’s council meeting.
