A course designed for the enthusiastic home brewer to learn about the art of creating genuine, pure beer is now available in Bunbury.
South Regional TAFE recently secured the expertise of German master beer brewer Erich Massberg who is looking forward to imparting his years of wisdom to others through a unique one-day course in full-grain brewing – Brew your own Beer.
Mr Massberg has a rich history and passion in beer brewing, originating in his homeland Germany and developed over many years brewing traditional, quality beer.
“This would be perfect for those wanting to step up from bucket brewing – in one day they would get enough information to be able to brew good quality beer,” he said.
“Most of my knowledge comes from Germany – it’s a classic style brewing from the 50s through to the 70s.
“I like to get the message across that it’s about quality first not quantity – we brew beer and everyone can get some hands-on experience and training.”
Mr Massberg said he believed that to make something high quality and enjoyable, it needed to be done in the right way with the right equipment and the right ingredients.
“Watching a video online to learn something isn’t the same as having someone there with you to teach you the right brewing techniques,” he said.
“I’ve developed over the years a system in micro-brewing where we use the knowledge of the past mixed with new electronic computerised systems of the present.”
Mr Massberg was the founder of one of the first micro-breweries in Western Australia, the successful Duckstein Micro-Brewery and Restaurant in the Swan Valley and later set about developing a home brewery that enabled anyone to enjoy authentic beer brewing.
Describing the brewing of beer as a craft as well as an excellent pursuit, he said it was a hobby that could pay for itself and could turn into a passion.
The course will be run at the Bunbury campus with class sizes limited to enable hands-on involvement in the actual beer brewing process. For more information contact 9780 7070 or visit southregionaltafe.wa.edu.au/short-courses.
