WestCycle has announced that Bunbury will be the host of the 2018 Cycling Australia Junior Road National Championships from September 21 to 23.
Presented by CycleSport WA on behalf of Cycling Australia, the Junior Road National Championships is expected to attract 300 of the country’s top young cyclists in the Under 15 and 17 categories.
The National Championships will also be the final event in the National Junior Road Series which will roll out across the country from April 2018.
Organisers said event will draw competitors and spectators from Queensland, Tasmania, Victoria and New South Wales.
WestCycle chief executive officer Matt Fulton said Bunbury was an ideal location for this year’s competition.
“The City of Bunbury have been very supportive, both financially but also in their spirit of the event and wanting to get right behind it,” he said.
“The courses are truly spectacular and really showcase the best of what WA has to offer.
“The location will help WA set a new standard for national level events and continually put these opportunities on the calendar for our state.”
Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said he was excited the city would be hosting the inaugural cycling event.
“It is a great honour to have Bunbury selected as the host city for the 2018 championships,” he said.
“It will bring a number of benefits to Bunbury – both economically and by encouraging participation in sports – not to mention showcasing our great city to visiting athletes and their friends and families who will get to experience the paradise that is our city.”
The City partnered with WestCycle to help bring the national competition to the South West.
Established in 2011, WestCycle aims to be the catalyst for cycling in Western Australia by actively promoting cycling and aiming to make Western Australia’s roads safer for cycling and communities more bike friendly.
