A group of Bunbury students recently won $2500 for their school’s science program through the Synergy Schools Solar Challenge.
Four Year 6 girls from Bunbury Primary School – Sophie Lenane, Daytonna Longbottom, Bonnie Keusch, and Arabella Munday – went up against students from all over the South West.
Each group was told to design and build a solar-powered remote control car before racing it around a purpose-built track.
The competition took place over three rounds, with each group needing two wins to eclipse their rivals.
Keusch said, after losing round one, the team – named ‘Obsidian’ – rallied together to achieve victory.
“We were actually quite slow in the first race,” she said.
“We then changed the angle of the solar panel because the sun had moved.
“We had an hour to make it and test it, so we were really up against the clock.”
Longbottom said the group used scientific knowledge and teamwork to complete their tasks.
The four said they were looking forward to learning more about science.
“Science is all about experimenting, changing things around, and exploring,” Munday said.
The school was thrilled to see a team of four girls succeed in such a high-stakes interschool competition.
Earlier this year, the school held trials to determine who would represent Bunbury PS at the event.
Lenane, Longbottom, Keusch and Munday were the final four competitors.
