A handful of South West basketballers will soon reach new heights.
Three players from Bunbury, one from Eaton, and one from Australind will represent Western Australia at the Under 18 Australian Junior Championships in Geelong, Victoria from April 21 to 28.
Tayah Burrows, Cian Parsons and McKayhla Pomare were picked for the women’s side.
The team will be aided by Assistant Coach Darren Austin, also of Bunbury.
Alastair Ishigami-Sims and Shamus Trainor will play alongside athletes from Geraldton, Mandurah, Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Manjimup and Albany in the WA men’s team.
Bunbury’s Paul Craig will serve as the team’s Assistant coach.
The men’s team plays its first game against New South Wales Metro on April 21 before the women’s team faces Queensland North on the 22nd.
Burrows played for the women’s side at last year’s U18 Junior Championships.
In between being selected and playing in the tournament, the 16-year-old worked on shooting, agility training, fitness, and ball skills.
“It is a privilege to represent your State and the country at a national tournament,” she said.
“It is going to be tough over there and you have to be on the money with your skills.”
Burrows currently plays for the South West Slammers’ women’s side and represented Tornadoes Red in the 2017/18 Bunbury Basketball Association league series.
