The South West Phoenix Firebirds made it three wins from three matches on Sunday with a 4-0 win at Curtin University.
Eleanor Coventry scored her third hat trick in three weeks and Nicole Suttie added a fourth as Firebirds maintained their 100 per cent start to the season and remain on top of the Division One ladder.
The Firebirds started confidently following their win over Wanneroo last week and took the lead early on when Coventry finished off an impressive passing move which saw almost every player on the Firebirds team touch the ball.
However, Firebirds didn’t assert control as the half progressed, and in difficult weather conditions were unable to build on their lead.
Curtin had a few half chances of their own but were unable to find a way past a solid Firebirds defence and Dayle Schroeder in goals as the first half drew to a close.
The Firebirds came out strongly in the second half and effectively put the result to bed with two quick goals.
Firstly, Coventry scored after receiving a through ball from Nicole Suttie, then Coventry was awarded a penalty and she stepped up to take it herself and wrap up her hat trick, putting the Firebirds 3-0 up.
Firebirds were now well in control, and added a fourth goal late on when Nicole Suttie collected Lucy Scott’s pass and slotted past the keeper from just inside the box.
Overall it was a good result in difficult conditions and one that keeps Firebirds on top of the ladder.
Coach Stephen Suttie said: “It was a good result in tough conditions and we ground out the win we wanted”.
“We have some good momentum and confidence is high at the moment. We look forward to the challenge again next week.”
Firebirds are at home against Perth Soccer Club this Sunday at 2pm as they look to make it four wins from four.
