The Astronomical Society of the South West is seeking help to break the world record for the ‘most people stargazing across multiple venues’.
The attempt is part of the ABC's Stargazing Live program.
The current world record, set in 2015 by the Australian National University, is 7,960 people across 37 locations.
The ABC, in partnership with The Australian National University, aim to set a new record so large that it will be difficult to break again.
The Astronomical Society of the South West, in association with The South West Science Council, hopes more than 200 people will participate in the event locally.
Event coordinator Brian Raynor encouraged those with a curiosity for the world around them to participate.
“For many people it is something they have a passing interest in and this is an opportunity to participate and learn a bit more,” he said.
“Stargazing helps you see a new a perspective of your own world. When you learn about space and the universe it often changes your perception of where you live – and that’s a good thing.
“The attempt is about fun, getting everyone in the community involved. Rather than sit at home and watch it happen on TV, come and join in.”
To break the record, everyone involved must look at an astronomical object for 10 minutes.
The event is free, but participants must register and have tickets.

The event will be held at the Bunbury Recreation Oval on May 23 at 6pm.
