The 25th birthday celebrations for this year’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea have already begun.
Bunbury funeral home William Barrett and Sons is the only host in WA to have held a morning tea consequently since the Cancer Council of WA launched the initiative in 1994.
To mark the milestone and highlight the community support which has enabled that success - a short video was launched on Monday which illustrates the success behind the event and why it must continue.
The video, produced by Lomax Media, features passionate volunteers whose lives have been devastated by cancer, Belinda Poole whose father David Poole died last year and Lyn Hill who has terminal cancer.
It also features the South Bunbury Primary School choir which has been a part of the event since it begun.
“We really want this year to be big, to raise a record amount and celebrate what we’ve achieved here in Bunbury,” event coordinator Taryn Barrett said.
“Cancer has touched nearly all our lives and survival rates have soared over the past 25 years so right around Australia we do have cause to celebrate.
“However it's important to remember that cancer continues to devastate local families every day and that’s why we have to continue."
Funds raised at the event go towards support services and research by the Cancer Council of WA.
Over the past 24 years, the event has raised more than $280,000.
“Let’s see how high we can get that figure,” William Barrett and Sons director Adrian Barrett says in the video.
This year’s Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea will be held on Thursday, May 24 between 9am and 1pm.
Morning tea or the sausage sizzle lunch is $5 and there will be raffles and entertainment.
For those who cannot make it, morning tea or a sausage sizzle lunch can be delivered to workplaces.
