One men's group in Bunbury is exploring the physical and psychological benefits of regular exercise.
The squad made its first visit to Vampfit Gym on Friday, May 11 and was given a tour by Vampfit Gym owner Joe Catalano.
Group facilitator Jamie Bartlett said the experience gave them a taste of the gym’s set-up and atmosphere.
“The whole point of the group is social inclusion, fitness and mental health,” he said.
“You get physical activity out of it – as well as longevity – and it takes you out of your head.
“The group is about getting you out of the house, being involved with others, and socialising.”
Mr Catalano said he talked to the group about “health, fitness, and confidence”.
He said the gym provided a friendly, relaxed environment for members to meet new people.
The group has already taken part in cycling, crabbing, fishing, lawn bowls, boat tours, and barbecues.
The Wellness for Men project, funded by the WA Primary Health Network, was devised as a 12-month trial for men dealing with mental illness or recovering from drug or alcohol addiction.
The initiative brought participants together to engage in socially and physically rewarding activities once a fortnight.
Chorus mental health services manager Jerry Caruana said the project also provided tips to improve health and wellbeing.
“The key benefit is that we’re reaching men who might not always reach out for support,” he said.
“They develop social skills, confidence, and an ability to manage their own mental health.”
