Carers working in the South West will have the opportunity to share their experiences and the challenges they face on a daily basis when the Community Services Minister visits later this month.
Community Services Minister Simone McGurk will travel to Bunbury to meet with carers and people working with carers and hear about the opportunities and the challenges they experience on May 30.
Ms McGurk said it was vital that carers were supported and respected and that their experiences were listened to.
“There are more than 320,000 carers in Western Australia who provide unpaid care, support and assistance to people with disability or chronic illnesses, including mental illness, or who are frail,” she said.
“I encourage all carers, and those working with them, to attend the engagement session in Bunbury.”
The Carers Advisory Council, which reports to the Minister on the interests of carers, is hosting the event, with discussions focusing on opportunities and the challenges that carers face in regional areas.
South West Carers Advisory Council chairperson Maria Radosavljevic said she hoped carers would take advantage of the opportunity to come along and be a part of a positive discussion.
“It's great Ms McGurk is taking time out to come down to Bunbury, giving carers a fantastic opportunity to express some of the truths that occur with the challenging, ongoing, lifestyle faced by carers,” she said.
The State Government funds and supports many carer initiatives, including providing more than $1 million of annual funding to peak body, Carers WA.
The event is being held from 10am to 2pm on Wednesday, May 30 at the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre.
Carers, and those working with carers, are encouraged to attend the session.
