An advocacy group has called for one of Dalyellup’s most precious environmental resources to be preserved.
Save Dalyellup Tuart Bushland has asked for the State Government to add Greenpatch to the newly-proposed Preston River to Ocean Park region.
They said the move would prevent the development of residential lots in the area.
Resident Kerry Bemrose said the group would take its case to the government.
“We know the next part of the fight to protect the Greenpatch is with the State, and we are prepared to step up to the challenge,” she said.
“The State government, as both the landowner and decision-making body, has a real opportunity here to consider strategic sustainable development.
“Bushland can no longer be seen as just vacant land with no purpose except concrete and housing.”
South West MLC Diane Evers agreed with the idea to add Greenpatch to the new park’s boundaries.
She said it would protect the area from nearby sewage and waste facilities.
Ms Evers, however, acknowledged the plans rested with the Western Australian Planning Commission.
Member for Bunbury Don Punch said the WA Planning Commission would take all appropriate matters into account before taking the next step.
“The land comprising the Green Patch is not currently available to be included in the Preston River to Ocean Regional Park but if those circumstances change I would welcome consideration being given to whether or not it should be incorporated into the Park,” he said.
“I have always said any future development in Dalyellup must contribute to the overall liveability and amenity of the area. I do have concerns about the current proposal and have made those concerns known.”
On April 26, the Shire of Capel rejected a proposal from Satterley to develop lots on the site.
The council turned down the plan due to environment concerns and intense community backlash.
The proposed development would have seen up to 213 lots being built in Greenpatch.
Greenpatch is a 22.5 hectare area of coastal Tuart bushland and wetland, home to endangered flora and fauna.
