Going into its clash with the East Perth Eagles, the Slammers women’s squad was vying for its sixth win of the season.
The Slammers started shakily, as Eagles Eryn Fisher (19 points) and Ladondra Johnson (18) hit their targets throughout the first quarter.
Georgia Denehey (20) and Tayah Burrows (13) kept the Slammers motivated and helped them gain a one-point lead at the first change.
Both sides missed crucial opportunities during the second term, while Charlotte van Kleef (scoring a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds) worked to extend the Slammers’ lead.
Feeling the home court advantage, the Slammers were lightning quick around the court.
Leading by 13 at the main break, the home side was well prepared for the second half.
Eagle Brianna Fisher gave the Slammers strife, clinching a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Overcoming strong defenders and hard falls in the fourth quarter, the Slammers went from a 15-point lead at three-quarter time to a 67 to 58 win.
The result saw the Slammers move up to seventh and edge closer to finals contention.
The Slammers men’s team, however, is looking for answers after its 92 to 80 loss against the Eagles.
Both teams went shot-for-shot in the first half, before star Brian Voelkel (9) assisted his side in nabbing a nine-point lead at quarter time.
As Slammers Michael Lay (15) and Travis Durnin (11) impressed during the second term, Eagles Jonathan Morse (19 points, 15 rebounds), Anthony Golden (13), Ngor Manyang (12) shrunk the gap.
The game showcased Slammer Brandon Thompson’s prowess, with the import landing 22 points and moving swiftly past defenders.
As the Slammers ran out of energy in the final term, Corey Easley (11) and captain Drew Williamson (11) helped the Eagles to a 12-point win.
Ahead of round 15, the Slammers sit in 12th spot with four wins and 12 losses.
