Described by South West Police as a “significant crop for Bunbury”, local detectives have uncovered approximately 150 cannabis plants housed within a Millbridge residence.
It all started at 3pm on Wednesday, June 20, when police executed a search warrant over an enquiry into ‘suspicious behaviour’.
Upon entering the Duncan Loop residence, police personnel discovered a “large and sophisticated” hydroponic cannabis set-up featuring plants at all different stages of growth.
The house had been diverting electricity from the main meter system.
A 65-year-old man – unknown to police prior to the bust – was arrested and charged with cultivating a prohibited plant with intent to sell or supply.
He faced Bunbury Magistrates Court on Thursday, June 21.
Acting Detective Inspector Jon Munday said police were looking into the man’s potential ties with criminal networks.
He said the house had been used specifically to cultivate illicit substances.
“We have had a very sophisticated cannabis crop growing in this normal residential street for what appears to be an extended period of time,” he said.
“Any illicit or prohibited drug is a priority for WA police...we don’t shy away from any prohibited drug, we treat them all the same.”
Det. Insp. Munday said these types of set-ups can go unnoticed for long periods of time.
“Unless there is some attention drawn to the house, people may be unaware of what is going on,” he said.
“We are asking for the general public to look out for any suspicious behaviour around houses.
“Unfortunately, it’s not unusual in this day-and-age to find crops of this nature.”
The investigation is still ongoing, with police searching for other suspects.
