The team at Laser Electrical, Bunbury are celebrating the immense achievements of one of their newly-qualified electricians.
Baz Wallace recently won the Legrand Australia 2018 WA Apprentice of the Year prize at the 2018 Master Electricians Australia Awards.
The 20-year-old took out the award from a field of five nominees.
Mr Wallace is Laser Electrical’s second WA Apprentice of the Year winner, with Scott Bryant attaining the award before winning Australian Apprentice of the Year in 2014.
Mr Wallace’s journey began in 2014, when the then 16-year-old made himself known to Laser Electrical directors Calwyn and Michelle Griffiths while undergoing work experience as a Year 11 student.
His one-day-a-week stint, over eight to ten weeks, turned into a chance to showcase his skills and earn himself an apprenticeship.
“I’ve learned how to handle things when they don’t quite go to plan and it has made me more resilient in my work,” he said.
Mr and Mrs Griffiths said they were proud of Mr Wallace for his determination and willingness to learn.
“He’s completely familiar with the way we operate our business and our systems,” Mrs Griffiths said.
“He’s totally capable of fulfilling the role of a fully-qualified electrician.”
When not learning the trade, Mr Wallace was perfecting his boxing skills at Dennings Boxing and Fitness Gym.
Trained by the late Peter Stokes, his discipline and tenacity helped him successfully compete in state, national, and international tournaments.
Mr Wallace completed his Certificate III in Electrotechnology at South Regional TAFE last year, and now works in Laser Electrical’s Perth outlet.
The electrician is confident he can clinch the Australian Apprentice of the Year award in September.
