The United Ecumenical Catholic Church, Bunbury recently held a small but significant celebration for the parish of Saint Nicholas.
Marius William King was the first baptism, Chrismation (Confirmation) and Holy Communion for the little-known Church.
Established a year ago, membership of St Nicholas has grown, one person at a time, to be a relevant and pastoral Christian presence in the Bunbury area, that welcomes all without judgement.
St Nicholas, Bunbury, is an Independent Catholic Church not in Communion with or under the Pope of Rome.
The Ecumenical Catholic Church was established by Bishop Carlos Daute, A Roman Catholic Bishop, who opposed the Churches co-operation with the government of Brazil, in the 1930s and 40s.
It is a fully Sacramental Church in the Catholic Apostolic Tradition.
The church is also welcomes all people, including Gay and lesbian singles and couples.
It has provided a safe and inclusive community environment where people, including those angry at the lack of action and/or accountability of the Roman Catholic Church, can still practice their faith.
The church has offered support to those abused or effected by abuse of family members or friends.
It is also one of the few churches that officiate same-sex marriages and permit divorced people to re-marry in the church and receive communion.
The church celebrates mass each Sunday at 6:30pm, at St Augustine Uniting Church 119 Mangles Street, South Bunbury.
The Parish of St Augustine’s has allowed them to use the church for mass and sacramental services each Sunday.
