The City of Bunbury has set its sights on numerous projects aimed at improving sporting facilities in the region.
City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan said Hands Oval would come into consideration during the budget review in September.
“At the first budget review meeting, we will look at considering allocating money to help with the preparation and conceptual plans for Hands Oval,” he said.
“It wasn’t included in the actual budget but was highlighted as something we would look at in the first budget review in September.
“They are looking at $50,000 to assist with conceptual plans for new changerooms and the grandstand.
“It’s a much-needed project in that the changerooms and grandstand at Hands Oval are 60-years-old.”
Mr Brennan said they were also looking at plans to develop housing near the Halsey Street end of the precinct.
He said the city has also discussed lighting and drainage projects for Hay Park.
He added they have also explored options at replacing toilet amenities across the facility.
“We have a Hay Park Master Plan which we adopted a couple of years ago and that’s in place,” he said.
“We’re putting in underground power lines to increase lighting. Those things are under way.”
Mr Brennan said they were also looking at options for Kelly Park Football Club and PC Payne Park.
“With the Bunbury Football Club, it’s very early days regarding the future of Payne Park and where the club would like to go,” he said.
“The football club would like to work with us, as far as a possible relocation is concerned, so we’ll have that discussion down the track and will engage strongly with the community on that.”
Bunbury Bulldogs Football Club president Tom Busher confirmed that nothing was set in stone.
“We’ve got about seven years to go on our lease, and what we’re keen to do is have a general discussion with the city looking at longer-term options,” he said.
“There’s no firm position about moving away from Payne Park, this is about being sensible about having some discussions.”
