Four athletes have proven that Bunbury is full of high-achieving, enthusiastic masters hockey players.
Samantha Cameron, Marie Fulbert-Hadet, Dean Lomax, and Anita Scott recently represented Australia at the 2018 EXIN Masters World Cup in Terrassa, Spain.
Competing between July 27 and August 5, the athletes took on teams from around the world in front of adoring fans.
Cameron and Scott took part in the Australia 45+ Women’s campaign, with the side placing fourth behind the Netherlands, England, and Russia.
The squad claimed four wins and one loss to finish second in Pool A.
After falling to England in the semi-final, Australia lost to Russia on penalties in the third-place play-off.
Scott took up masters hockey in 2011, before bringing home gold in the 2014 and 2016 EXIN Masters World Cups.
She said the experience of playing for Australia was “a real honour”.
“When you get older, you don’t think you’ll be able to get that opportunity,” she said.
“So, it’s an honour to put on the green and gold and listen to the Anthem.
“It’s good to get back into the Australian side and to re-kindle the friendships you make over the years.”
The Australia 55+ Women’s team, featuring Fulbert-Hadet, was the red-hot favourite after clinching top spot in the group stage.
In the grand final, Australia and England played out a 1-1 draw and forced the game into penalties.
It was not Australia’s day, with the side going down 0-3 to England in the shootout.
Playing in his third consecutive EXIN Masters World Cup, Lomax had a tournament to remember.
Following a 3-0 quarter-final win against France and 2-1 semi-final victory over England, the Australia 50+ Men’s side met Holland in the decider.
Australia then brought down the Netherlands, 2-1, in an engrossing showdown.
The Australian Women’s Masters Championships will entertain Bunbury and Busselton from September 27 to October 6.
In 2019, the Australian Men’s Masters Championships will provide another boost for hockey in the region.
