It was a case of ‘right place, right time’ for Jenna Gmeiner during the South West Strikers’ clash with Southern River on Saturday afternoon.
In the first half, the Strikers contended with Southern River’s fast pace and powerful attempts on goal.
Following a handful of near misses, a short corner from Southern River set up Tanya Britz’s first of two goals for the game.
Three minutes before half time, Striker Pia Kirk delivered an impressive shot to secure the equaliser.
Undeterred by the Strikers’ efforts, Britz then clinched her second goal with one minute remaining.
The Strikers looked to overtake Southern River in the second half.
Backed by a frenzying group of supporters at Bunbury Hockey Stadium, the Strikers celebrated as Gmeiner slotted her first goal.
With two minutes remaining, the ball unexpectedly struck Gmeiner’s stick before deflecting off Southern River’s Goal Keeper and landing between the posts.
Thanks to Gmeiner’s second, the Strikers claimed a 3-2 victory and retained third spot on the ladder.
The side is ready for its Round 21 clash with Rockingham in Bunbury this weekend.
